  • Classical music with soul
Amazing album great music and great artist crosses genres. Truly an amazing listen.
  • Great CD
Grest interpretation of the classics. Jon Batiste is phenomenal!
  • Great album.
Fabulous album. John Batiste is a true genius.
  • I really Love This Album<3
Yes Please! Soothing and exciting and purely beautiful! The NOLA infusions show this artist has a mind of his own and that he truly and deeply loves music! I bought his work because I enjoyed this flare during the National Anthem at Super Bowl 2025…Some didn’t like it, but to me it was a breath of fresh, sweet musical air! I loved his performance and I adore this album with my heart and soul…Thank You For this Creation!
  • What is your impression of Beethoven?
Recently, on the NHK variety show “Chiko-chan ni Shikarareru” (Chiko-chan will be angry ), the question “Why does Beethoven’s portrait look angry?” was asked. The answer was that he was not angry at all. The negative image that is circulated on the street, that Beethoven was always in a bad mood, short-tempered and easily angered, influences people who see his portrait, making them look angry. I knew about Jon Batiste’s news that he won five Grammy Awards, but I didn’t know what kind of performance he would give. I was surprised when I heard the sample recording “Für Elise – Batiste” attached to the newsletter from Universal Music Japan. Isn’t this blues? Isn’t it a shocking performance for classical musicians who have always been strictly trained to play faithfully to the score? But surely it points to a new direction in interpreting classical music? Batiste said in the newsletter, “How can we evolve classical music into a new form? I wanted to give classical music new power.””Beethoven Blues” also includes three of Batiste’s own compositions (“Dusklight Movement”, “American Symphony Theme”, and “Life Of Ludwig”), which blend seamlessly with the other Beethoven compositions included here. I especially like “Dusklight Movement”. The repeated simple phrases increase the sense of loneliness as dusk approaches. Why was this song played after “Moonlight Sonata Blues”? Was the moon we saw earlier not the yellow moon at night, but the white moon that appears at dusk? “Life Of Ludwig” could also be a good third version of “Symphony No 5”.Batiste explained in the newsletter about the 5th Symphony in Congo Square: “Congo Square is the name of a historic musical practice site in New Orleans for Africans who were brought to the country as slaves. West African rhythms have two different beats. The inclusion of the beats of 2 and 6 (3), that is, odd and even, allows yin and yang, bittersweet and sweet to coexist. Beethoven’s music and African rhythms have something in common, and Beethoven was actually influenced by such primitive African rhythms.” The 5th Symphony has the subtitle “Fate.” This performance even expresses the “fear” and “horror” that people brought to a foreign land as slaves would have felt. It seems to convey how they felt about their “fate.””Für Elise – Reverie” is not only the best piece, but also the longest. Batiste describes Beethoven as “a mythical, transcendental figure who portrays through his music the many things that make up our world”. Through this piece, we can feel Batiste’s joy at being able to converse so intimately with such a great figure. This piece perfectly illustrates Batiste’s reasoning behind choosing “Reverie” instead of “Reprise” as the title.
  • Extraordinary Music
Jon Batista is an extremely talented musician with a broad ranch of music genres. Mixing Beethoven and Blues is thrilling to listen to and enjoy. Such wonderful talent
  • A modern masterpiece
If you have ever heard Batiste sing or play anything, you know he is covered up with genius. This album is no exception. It’s those familiar songs that were taught to my generation by Bugs Bunny, but infused with soul. I absolutely love this entire album. My favorites are the 5th symphony and moonlight sonata.
  • Great album
Great album. I bought it for my mom who is a classical music fan and she loved it!

Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker

Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker

Price: $30.91
4.8/5

(534 reviews)

What Customers Say:

  • Rattle offers a new look at the Nutcracker, full of nostalgia and beautiful playing from those Berliners
Rattle has often been accused of fussiness, of letting the line drag to the point where the charm is lost. There’s few works that ask for as much charm as Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, which probably causes some justified apprehension on the part of those who are looking into this disc. I can see where the albums’ critics are coming from, simply because Rattle doesn’t succeed in matching the sprightly balletic qualities that other great conductors have been able to pull out of the work, particularly Dorati and Bychkov. Rattle offers wonderful big sound, phenomenal first desk playing (particularly from oboist Albrecht Mayer), and EMI’s sonics are top notch. But beyond these perhaps technical details, Rattle’s approach differs in many ways from the other versions I own, namely Gergiev/Kirov, Dorati/Concertgebouw, and Bychkov/Berlin, in addition to Bernstein/New York, Rostropovich/Berlin, and Lazarev/Bolshoi in the suite. Rattle takes more time than most, allowing him to uncover aspects of the score that often slip by in other conductor’s hands. As alluded to earlier, Rattle is less concerned with being balletic than probably all the aforementioned version, something which is most keenly felt in such numbers as the “Overture” and “March”. But even there, Rattle imparts a wistful nostalgia that holds one’s attention, although I still feel that he doesn’t match competition. It’s in the numbers that ask for more than amusement where Rattle really finds his place. After hearing his version of “The Waltz of the Snowflakes”, “The Arabian Dance”, “The Waltz of the Flowers”, and “Pas de Deux”, my other versions seem dull in comparison. Rattle finds an inner beauty in these numbers that is breathtaking. “Pas de Deux” eerily prophesies of what was to come in the “Pathetique”, making for a highly logical, yet unfamiliar perspective. When it’s all said and done, it’s the beauty of the Berliners’ tone that makes this disc extra special. Rattle uses his orchestra as a vehicle to display a vast palate of gorgeous colors, making for very festive music. Those wanting a Nutcracker to keep them on the go will meet certain disappointment, but for those who are willing to take the time, this new Rattle version is one of the best.
  • What’s not to like
Great music, great conductor along with very good sound for the time frame. Highly recommended.
  • Beautifully recorded, buy this one.
The sound quality is excellent, Vivid and bright where it has to be, subdued where it should be subdued. Never distorted due to over modulation of the sound level for emphasis, a perfect Tchaikovsky NutcrackerThe conductor and his orchestra have rendered a gorgeous recording of this holiday classic, highly recommend buying this version. My previous favorite was the “Andre Previn, EMI Digital, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra,1986”, version. This version is now my favorite, simply for the purity of the sound quality,The seller, Belkin House in the United Kingdom, also delivered it safely to America from the United Kingdom in a well protected shipping envelope.
  • Beautiful album!
This double vinyl album of the Nutcracker is so beautiful. The records are high quality and arrived in excellent condition. The quality of sound is wonderful, too, and the songs are so beautiful. So happy with my purchase.
  • High Quality
This was a high-quality CD. The music was clear and as expected. It was wrapped in plastic and well-protected in the mailer. I would buy again from this business.
  • Outstanding performance packed in a cereal box
Warner needs to step up their game with their line of LP records; no voucher code for a digital download (DG, DECCA, and the Berlin Philharmonic’s own label provide codes for digital downloads now), no inner booklet or gatefold outer sleeve. This was purchased for $25 in “Like new” condition from the Amazon Wherehouse and the price seems fair for what the set contains. However, at $35, this should be packaged in a sleeve that looks like it was made in a garage with a cereal box. Shame on you warner. In any case, the performance itself is wonderful! records were clean and reproduced no surface noise whatsoever.
  • Beautiful music
    Beautiful music to listen to.
  • Great sound and great music.
Enjoy it frequently during daytime and night .

What Customers Say:

  • Great Intro To Classical Music
I’m not sure I could have done better than purchasing this set for a broader listening experience to classical music. My classical listening is limited to mostly soundtracks to movies and this collection confirms that. I hear pieces used in Oceans Eleven(remake), Road To Perdition as well as those I couldn’t connect. The Baroque cd really caught my attention. If I had anything to complain about, it would be the fidelity is somewhat lacking on some of the cds but overall still very pleasing to the ear. I highly recommend this set if your classical experience is limited like mine. I would like to add that eighty percent of the music I listen is jazz of the late forty’s up til the late sixties. I am on a Bill Evans binge that I can’t seem to shake.
  • Beautifully Arranged
Love this collection. The quality of sound is clear and beautiful to hear. I enjoy the organization of the music by the Strings, Piano, Romantic, etc. So happy I was able to get this item.
  • Nice and sharp
How wonderful it is to listen to this collection. The sound is clear and sharp, and of course the music isn’t bad either! 🙂 It is great to have these classics in a collection of CD’s, and I am sure I will listen to them as often as I want.
  • 100 Classical Pieces
This CD is exactly what it says – 100 Classical Pieces. The top thing I think buyers should be aware of is that this is not a “Top 100 Classical”. And that’s fine – everyone’s view of what the top 100 classical pieces ARE would be slightly different, and there are plenty of absolute top-tier pieces in this collection (although I am surprised it doesn’t have Pachelbel’s Canon in D, probably the most famous piece of classical music in the US). The second thing to be aware of is that they’re trying to fit 100 tracks on 5 CDs, which means the average length is under 4 minutes. You’re not going to get too many lengthy pieces. The longest track in the collection is the first movement of Beethoven’s Third Symphony (Eroica) at 14 minutes, while the shortest is the 28-second second movement of Bach’s Brandenburg concerto No. 3, II. Adagio (which is genuinely that short). But this is a solid collection of music covering the last four centuries, and it’s introduced me to Arturo Piazzolla.
  • Excellent value for money with high quality of sound effects!
This 5 CD set includes the classic musics through out whole periods. Each CD features the Carefully selected top music in a period. How Excellent it is for the value for money! What are the high quality of the sound effects! I really love it!
  • A very nice mix of music for the price
All of my favorites plus some. A very nice mix of music for the price.
  • All of your favorites!
Lots of music by composers you will know. Each disc is from a different period. I love it! Nothing like blasting a little Mozart on the way to a dreaded meeting to pump you up! Or to keep you calm in traffic. This set lives in my car which is old enough to still have a CD player. LOL
  • Despite no package damage, CDs came with scratches & scuff marks that did not effect the music.
Good classical music collection. However, even though the packaging was not damaged, 2 out of the 5 CDs had actual scratches and the other 3 CDs came with light scuff marks on the music side of the CD. Luckily none of these scratches or scuff marks affected the music. But, if I would have seen in a store CDs in this condition I would not have purchased them.

The Very Best of Peter, Paul and Mary

What Customers Say:

  • Memorable beautiful music
    Wonderful collection of great songs.
  • Peter Paul and Mary
The group always sang beautiful songs!!!
  • as described
    Good music good cd
  • Great compilation
    Love their harmony.
  • too liberal
except for their activist music, a really good group
  • Folksville Revisited
My heart fluttered when this collection was brought to my attention. The idea you could get all their familiar hits, plus some additional gems, like Paul Stookey’s “Wedding Song (There Is Love)” seemed like a no-brainer. I’ve been wanting one of their compilations for some time now, having missed their ‘(Ten) Years Together/The Best of Peter, Paul, and Mary’ on vinyl for years, but seeing their selection on this C.D. made it a done deal. The C.D. keeps all the songs of the former collection intact, but the additional material makes one beg for an explanation why they hadn’t thought of it earlier. (The answer to that is probably along the same lines as other artists: They want you to buy the original albums and only refer to “‘Ultimate Greatest Hits” packages as a follow up.) Now’s as good a time as any. One of the great advantages of this C.D. is the crystal clear sound. On the CD player in my living room or in the car or even in my MP3 player, these vintage songs translate better than nearly any oldies venue I can think of, much like the resonance of Sam Cooke, which is the way I wish they’d all sound. Having a look at their former collection from 2003 (of the same title) reveals some improvement in their content. Now to the selection. They wisely keep what we’ve grown accustomed to intact. “Lemon Tree,” “500 Miles,” “Puff the Magic Dragon,” “If I Had a Hammer,” “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” and “I Dig Rock and Roll Music” all sound great with their trademark three-part harmonies backed up with the barest essential instrumentation. Then, there’s the additions, such as the gospel-like “Early in the Morning,” Woody Gurthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” and Pete Seeger’s “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?”.The Post PPM years produced a few gems as well. Besides the aformentioned “Wedding Song…,” Peter Yarrow’s “Weave Me the Sunshine” and Mary Travers’ version of John Denver’s “Follow Me” are worthy additions. Honorable mention should go to later songs “El Salvador” and “Don’t Laugh Me,” which update the subject matter well for their legacy. After repeated listenings to this vintage collection, I wonder sometimes why I should listen to any processed recordings again. The fresh ingredients of voices and instruments are so basic, yet essential that they almost beg for an updated response for using synthesizers and digital recordings. The selection notes indicate remastering of their recordings, so there has been a happy translation to this C.D., but the liner notes are very good about relaying their history, which is a formidable one indeed. (As many know well, besides Seeger, Guthrie, and John Denver, Bob Dylan penned many of their popular covers.)
  • Item arrived works great. Great seller!
Item arrived on time and works great. Great seller!
  • No Exaggeration—Truly The Best
Most folk groups from the late 1950s and early ’60s haven’t held up well and are now forgotten. P, P, & M are an exception. Their blended voices, tasteful musicality, and song selections have made them classic artists of their genre. This one-disc album contains every one of their highest-charting hits, drawn from singles as well as such albums as “P, P and M,” “In the Wind,” “Moving,” “Album,” and “Mary.” Higlights (for me) are “500 Hundred Miles,” “Where Have All the Flowers Gone,” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,” “Kisses Sweeter Than Wine,” and “Follow Me.” (I’ve never been partial to “Leavin’ on a Jet Plane” or “I Dig Rock and Roll Music,” but if you are, you’ll find it here.) All twenty-five tracks are well remastered. Highly recommended.

  • No one plays it better
It would take a stone not to be moved by Perlman’s performance. I know of no other violinist who can demonstrates such discipline resulting in final abandon and brilliance. Only 4 stars not because of the performance but because the disc case was broken.

Excellent release, one of the best sounding LPs from the the DG Original Source Series.Maillard and Meyer did an outstanding job in transferring the audio and cutting a lacquer from the 70’s quadraphonic master tape. The sound is magnificent and clean. So glad this time the folks at Optimal did a great job in manufacturing the vinyl as it does not have surface noise or clicks (at least in the vinyl I got) like some other releases in the series.
